Tried & True: A Primer on Sound Pedagogy
Daniel B. Coupland
Teaching is incredibly complex, and it can be difficult to say anything meaningful about it. But education is far too important to be timid. At some point, new teachers need sound practical advice on how to do their important work. Tried & True does not traffic in nuance. It is unabashedly prescriptive in that it tells readers how they ought to do their job.
— from the Preface
Praise for Tried & True: A Primer on Sound Pedagogy:
“In his new book, Dan Coupland provides essential answers to crucial questions teachers face every day in their classrooms. Drawing on his years of experience as a teacher and as a teacher of teachers, he presents a resource rich in wisdom for all in the field, whether a new teacher or an experienced educator.”—Richard Corcoran, former Education Commissioner of Florida
“This book condenses years of experience and will save educators precious time. Our classical school uses it for teacher training, and I use its techniques in my work cultivating top-quality writers and editors.”—Joy Pullmann, founding board member of Redeemer Classical School and Editorial Director of The Federalist
“Dr. Coupland’s primer is deceptively simple—thoroughly practical, but with a world of theory behind it. This distillation of practical wisdom could only have come from someone with long experience teaching and talking to teachers. The book makes an important contribution, and is now one of two books we will give to every new teacher.”—Stephen Shipp, Headmaster, Seven Oaks Classical Academy
“Drawing on Daniel Coupland’s experience as a young teacher of high school Spanish and as Dean of Hillsdale College’s M.A. in Classical Education, Tried & True: A Primer on Sound Pedagogy illustrates essential aspects of K-12 teaching, including how to shape positive classroom behavior, how to lesson plan, how to begin and end each class well, how to assess and encourage students, etc. Coupland presents clear, practical tips to help novice teachers become successful professionals. Every beginning teacher will want to read and follow Daniel Coupland’s Tried & True.”—Christian Kopff, author of The Devil Knows Latin: Why America Needs the Classical Tradition
“Dr. Daniel Coupland delivers on a promise to create a primer on fourteen tested principles of excellent teacher practices to improve student learning. Each is refined and organized for understanding, which is a true testament to a clear and concise style of writing. As only a master teacher can do, this text realizes its objective, provides a resource to benefit new teachers, and reminds us all of the goal of teaching for human flourishing through ‘sound pedagogy.’”—Marc Shelton, College of Education Dean, George Fox University

Excellent, straightforward little book
I really enjoyed this book. It's a great place to start honing the craft of teaching well. It's full of excellent advice that is both manageable for new teachers and relevant to experienced ones -- no easy feat. It can be read in a day easily, and anyone involved in schools would do well to pick it up.
The Missing Nuts & Bolts
This book contains straightforward, simple, sensible advice and plans for running a successful classroom or school program. With teacher education focused primarily on unimportant subjects, most classrooms lack even the most common sense components such as those covered here. I highly recommend this book to both new and experienced teachers - we can all use a road map of tried and true tactics to deploy in our classrooms!
