"Of the generations who followed the Founders, some who would prove the most indispensable to the survival of the Republic down to our own time were its leaders in education. Of these, Ransom Dunn, while not among the most famous, was among the greatest. Dunn -- for whom fame was not a motivation -- established, financed, taught, and administered a college on the Western frontier beginning in the 1840s. This college was one of only 119 American colleges that granted four-year liberal arts degrees by 1850.
