"You don't know about me, without you have read a book by the name of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but that ain't no matter."

So begins, in characteristic fashion, one of the greatest American novels. Narrated by a poor, illiterate white boy living in America's deep South before the Civil War, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is the story of Huck's escape from his brutal father and the relationship that grows between him and Jim, the slave who is fleeing from an even more brutal oppression. As they journey down the Mississippi their adventures address some of the most profound human conundrums: the prejudices of class, age, and color are pitted against the qualities of hope, courage, and moral character.

Enormously influential in the development of American literature, Huckleberry Finn remains a controversial novel at the center of impassioned critical debate. This edition discusses all the current issues and the evolution of Mark Twain's penetrating genius.

This book is paperback and is recommended reading for Hillsdale's free online courses, "Great Books 102: Renaissance to Modern" and "Mark Twain: Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and Selected Short Stories."

Excellent

I’ve read it and taught it. I bought it for my 13-year-old granddaughter who loves to read. Currently, she is getting accustomed to Twain’s us of dialect and asking lots of questions. Young people her age rarely have any understanding of 19th century issues, but I believe it will resonate on some levels after she finishes reading it. For me, it was a corroboration and entry-way for me to discuss those times with my father, who was born in 1900. Though controversial at times because of the language, it is a gift, but then I’m biased since I’ve read much of Twain and have my favorites.
